The Concordance Genus of Knots
In knot concordance three genera arise naturally, g(K), g4(K), and gc(K): these are the classical genus, the 4–ball genus, and the concordance genus, defined to be the minimum genus among all knots concordant to K. Clearly 0 ≤ g4(K) ≤ gc(K) ≤ g(K). Casson and Nakanishi gave examples to show that g4(K) need not equal gc(K). We begin by reviewing and extending their results. For knots representin...
متن کاملStable Concordance of Knots in 3–manifolds
Knots and links in 3-manifolds are studied by applying intersection invariants to singular concordances. The resulting link invariants generalize the Arf invariant, the mod 2 Sato-Levine invariants, and Milnor’s triple linking numbers. Besides fitting into a general theory of Whitney towers, these invariants provide obstructions to the existence of a singular concordance which can be homotoped ...
متن کاملFinite Dehn Surgery on Knots
Let K be a knot with a closed tubular neighbourhood N(K) in a connected orientable closed 3-manifold W , such that the exterior of K, M = W − intN(K), is irreducible. We consider the problem of which Dehn surgeries on K, or equivalently, which Dehn fillings on M , can produce 3-manifolds with finite fundamental group. For convenience, a surgery is called a G-surgery if the resultant 3-manifold ...
متن کاملFinite surgeries on three-tangle pretzel knots
We classify Dehn surgeries on (p, q, r) pretzel knots that result in a manifold of finite fundamental group. The only hyperbolic pretzel knots that admit non-trivial finite surgeries are (−2, 3, 7) and (−2, 3, 9). Agol and Lackenby’s 6-theorem reduces the argument to knots with small indices p, q, r. We treat these using the Culler-Shalen norm of the SL(2, C)-character variety. In particular, w...
متن کاملCyclic and Finite Surgeries on Pretzel Knots
We classify Dehn surgeries on (p, q, r) pretzel knots resulting in a manifold M(α) having cyclic fundamental group and analyze those leading to a finite fundamental group. The proof uses the theory of cyclic and finite surgeries developed by Culler, Shalen, Boyer, and Zhang. In particular, CullerShalen seminorms play a central role.
